July 1964 WATS line calls. An uptick in violence and harassment can be seen here. Highlights of this lengthy folder include the passage of the Civil Rights Act; out-of-state congressmen witnessing Mary Lane's 9th unsuccessful attempt to register to vote in Greenwood, Mississippi; the July 9th Freedom House bombing in McComb, Mississippi; a number of church burnings; a variety of beatings--in jail, on the streets, in cars, in stores and restaurants, in doctors' offices, in courthouses when people tried to register to vote--; and torchings of people's cars and tear-gassing and bombing of their houses. McComb experienced 5 bombings in July. The July 24th list of phone calls made when a car full of civil rights workers was thought to be missing conveys the alarm experienced during Freedom Summer when civil rights workers traveled.
