- Description
View looking east down Main Street West which shows the building first used as the Ashland Post Office on the left. A street car is visible on the road and utility poles line the street. Storefronts of the 600 block line the street on the right and into the distance.
Work began on this building on August 15, 1892 and was completed by November 15, 1893. This building was built of native brownstone, procured from quarries adjacent to Ashland. The steps were built of St. Cloud granite. The plans were drawn by Government Architect Eddebrook and the contract for construction was let to Forster & Smith of Sault Ste Marie. The local superintending architect was H. P. Padley, of the firm Conover, Porter & Padley of Ashland. Starting in 1894 this building housed the Post Office. In 1940 it was turned over for the establishment of a vocational school. It housed the Ashland Vocational School until 1970, when the WITC Ashland Campus was completed. The building was then empty for a number of years. On January 21, 1974, it was named to the National Register of Historic Sites. In 1975 the City of Ashland was informed that it was a recipient of a grant from the Upper Great Lakes Regional Commission for restoration of the building for usage as a city hall
