- Description
This photographic print, taken by a Portage photographer around the turn of the twentieth century, is mounted on matboard and features the home of then-owner, P.S. Hollenbeck. This residence was likely constructed around the turn of the twentieth century by Philetus S. Hollenbeck. Architecturally, it represents the melding of Queen Anne and Colonial Revival construction. Queen Anne ornamentation is seen mostly in the wraparound style porch of this residence. The turned style posts, balustraded railing, and spindled frieze illustrate this. However, the symmetrical facade, regular layout, and Palladian window in the central gable, illustrate attention to Colonial Revival construction. Hollenbeck was known in Portage as the owner, operator, and manager of the Hollenbeck Furniture Store downtown, during the late nineteenth century. The annotation, located at the bottom left-hand corner of the object, lists the 1952 resident as Ervin Jowett. Sources: History of Columbia County 1880, 1914;
