- Description
This map of North America shows settlements, rivers, lakes, Native American land, trade winds, and numerous topographical features such as forests and mountains. Popple depicts the claims of the English, French and Spanish, though the desire to expand English territory is clear in this copy, as the borders of Virginia and the Carolinas are extended far to the west, and a note near the middle of Florida reads "The southward boundary of Carolina by the last charter." Another note, far outside the official boundaries of the colonies, to the west of South Carolina reads "a fit place for an English factory." The map includes four inset illustrations of Niagara Falls, Mexico City, Quebec, and New York, and sixteen small inset maps along the right side showing various ports and islands. Illustrations of ships dot the ocean, and an illustrated scene of a naval battle, entitled "Sr. Cha. Wager's Engagement," appears just above South America.
