Franklin Street, West - Number 324 - Residence of Edward B. Shanks

This photographic print, taken by a Portage photographer around the turn of the twentieth century, is mounted on matboard and features the residence of then-owner, E.B. Shanks. The dwelling was constructed in 1900 and it combines Queen Anne style with Colonial revival detailing. The Queen Anne details include the steeply pitched roof, asymmetrical layout, and multi-story porch that wraps around the building, and sunburst paneling in the triangular pediments. While Revival details include the diamond-paned window lattices, Palladian windows, curved balustrade, columned portico with Ionic order capitals, dentils, festoon plaster scroll work, and finial topped banisters on the second story balcony. The annotation, located at the bottom left-hand corner of the object, lists the 1952 resident of this dwelling as the granddaughters of Shanks with the last name of Reynolds.
