- Description
This photographic print, taken by a Portage photographer around the turn of the twentieth century, is mounted on mat board and depicts the home of Portage resident L.L. Breese. Llywelyn and Mary Breese constructed this ornate Victorian residence in 1886. The intricate detailing, seen in the woodwork may be attributed with the Eastlake style of Victorian domestic architecture. These details include the dominant front-facing gable, steeply pitched multi-gable roof, window dormers, cutaway bay windows, asymmetrical layout, multiple chimney stacks, half-timbering with inlay, spindled frieze on several porches, stained and beveled glass windows, Jigsaw-esque woodworking. The home was first remodeled in 1915 and has been remodeled again since. It has since been converted to the Breese Way Bed and Breakfast. The home's elaborate architectural detailing suggests Breeses wealth and taste. Breese was a well-accomplished businessman and official of Columbia County. He was born in North Wales
