Bentwood box with lid.; Norwegian bentwood boxes are formed by binding a thin sheet of wood around the base, lacing the joint where the ends meet with thin birch roots and then securing the base to the sides with pegs. The surface of this box is stained red. This type of box is known as a "sponesker" box in Norwegian. This item was collected by Albert Skare (1878-1967), of McFarland, Wisconsin, in the early-to-mid 20th century for his collection of objects related to Norwegian settlers. Source: Nelson, Marion, ed.
