- Description
This photographic print, taken by a Portage photographer around the turn of the twentieth century, is mounted on matboard and features the residence of then-owner C.J. Loomis. This Italianate dwelling on East Conant known as the Goodyear House, was built in 1881 by Darius A. Goodyear. The Italianate architectural details include the large overhang with bracketing, canted bay, brick corbelling, hooded entry, and side porch with chamfered posts. These details were characteristic of the Italianate style by the 1880s. According to census information (1905), Loomis was born in New York ca. 1855. He wed Carrie Loomis, who was born 1861, in Wisconsin. Together, they had four children, listed in 1905: Charlotte, born 1879, Rodney, born 1882, Emily, born 1887, and Gerald, born 1899. The census listed Loomis as a merchant in 1880. The annotation, located at the bottom left-hand corner of the object, lists the dwelling as an apartment, in 1952.
