- Description
Written from the perspective of an observant writer, Sally Belfrage's handwritten (mixed with shorthand) notes and typed diary entries and vignettes from Freedom Summer are here. Focusing primarily on the training she received in Oxford, Ohio, and events in Greenwood, Mississippi, where she worked, her notes on role-playing and nonviolence during the training of volunteers and detailed instructions about library supplies, book cataloging, and literacy techniques are particularly interesting. A re-typed issue of "The Klansman" is here as well as demographic information on Leflore County, Mississippi. There are notes from Walter Cronkite's television special, "The Search in Mississippi," as well as a brief account of civil rights workers' response to watching it. There are also song lyrics; descriptions of volunteers; and quotations about African Americans, slavery, and segregation from a variety of perspectives. Excerpts from WATS line reports June-August 1964, mostly concerning incid
