This photographic print, taken by a Portage photographer around the turn of the twentieth century, is mounted on matboard and features the Lawn of the Alois Zienert residence, which was once located on Prospect Avenue. Here, the fountain of the foreground and statuette of the background reveal the Victorian decorative details that Zienert chose for his residence. Alois Zienert was born in Austria in 1849. In 1869, he immigrated to America and ended up in Portage because his uncle was living in the growing community, working in the butchering business. He came to America via steam vessela two week journeyand took a train to Portage. Soon after, he left Portage and traveled westward, where he established a mercantile business. In 1894, he returned to Columbia County, where he retired. It is noted that he was elected and served as an alderman in the city council four years and then was elected to the office of mayor of Portage.
