- Description
This photographic print, taken by a Portage photographer around the turn of the twentieth century, is mounted on matboard and features the residence of then-owner, Captain C.C. Dow. This residence was built in the latter years of the nineteenth century and is a side gabled ell. Gabled ells were popular in the Portage area. This type of home was more stylistically simplistic with few elaborative details. Dow's home has more elaborate details in the turned style porch posts, which is reminiscent of Queen Anne detailing. The heavy frieze below the gable overhang suggests some attention to the popular Colonial revival style. According to the biographical information provided in the History of Columbia County (1880), Captain Charles C. Dow, was born in 1836 in New Hampshire. He relocated to Wisconsin in 1856. He enlisted as a private in the Co. G., 2d W. V. I. According to the History of Columbia County (1914), Dow was in the first and second battles of Bull Run, battles of the Wilderne
