This photographic print, taken by a Portage photographer around the turn of the twentieth century, is mounted on matboard and features the residence of then-owner, Darius A. Goodyear. The Italianate home, once located on West Pleasant Street, was constructed mid-nineteenth century. This architectural style includes the emphasis on verticality, low pitched roof, wide frieze board, arched windows with hoods, cast iron fencing and decorative work, and front veranda with chamfered posts. The residence photographed here was purchased by the Presbyterian Church in 1908. Then, in 1940, Columbia County purchased the dwelling, and as listed in the 1952 annotation, this building was the office for the Welfare Department. Sometime later, the Italianate structure was razed and replaced by the current Portage courthouse and its parking lot. According to the History of Columbia County (1880), Darius A.
