Real Photo postcard (ca. 1910) of the Kurth Brewery complex on Madison Street (now Park Avenue) in Columbus. Henry John Kurth established the Kurth Brewery in 1859. By 1870 the brewery had grown to be the largest of the three Columbus breweries and one of the most profitable Columbus businesses at the time. Producing 100 barrels of beer a day by 1914, Kurth's was the largest brewing company in Columbia County and owner of the largest malting operation in the country. Kurth's also owned two ice houses, a grain elevator near the Columbus railroad depot, beer distribution warehouses in Tomah, Portage, and Luxemburg, and 20 saloons throughout south-central Wisconsin, including three in Columbus. The photograph by James Quickenden, local pharmacist and amateur photographer, was taken before the 1916 fire that destroyed the three tallest buildings shown in this view from the south. After surviving Prohibition years by producing soda pop, Kurth Brewery remained a vital business in Columbus u
