- Description
Herman Kupper, shown here outside the first store he opened in 1909 in the 1700 block of Muskego Ave., came to Milwaukee from Russia in 1898 and worked as a watchmaker for a jeweler on the South Side before striking out on his own. The store window contained an elaborate display of jewelry, silver trays, mirrors and crystal items. Besides the sign above the entrance, the site was marked by the ornate street clock with Kupper's name on its face. In 1921 Kupper moved the business to 812 W. Mitchell St., an area second only to Downtown in retail sales. Kupper's wife, Rose, worked in the store and in the 1940s his three sons - Norman, Kenneth and Richard - joined the business. In 1946 the family purchased Estberg and Sons Jewelers in Waukesha. Today the third generation of the Kupper family is involved in the business. The Mitchell St. store, however, is going out of business April 3. Photograph and information courtesy of Kenneth Kupper, additional information from the Milwaukee P
