- Description
One of the few maps by Dutch cartographer Willem Blaeu depicting the Americas, this map shows regions, settlements, islands, mountains, forests, rivers, and lakes of the western hemisphere, complete with an inset map of Greenland and Iceland. Blaeu's map is one of the most prominent depictions of America to retain California as a peninsula rather than an island. The map is highly detailed and decorative; large clipper ships and sea monsters sail the oceans, while small illustrations of native people fill in empty spaces in South America. Nine engravings along the top border depict the larger cities and harbors of the Americas. Ten engravings along the right and left show Native American dress from Greenland to the southern point of South America, including children. This copy contains manuscript annotations, with some place names underlined in red.
