- Description
This photographic print, taken by a Portage photographer around the turn of the twentieth century, is mounted on matboard and features the residence of then-owner, James Baird. This dwelling on DeWitt Street, formally known as the C.D. Maine House, was built in 1892 by Maine. This home features Queen Anne style with some Colonial revival details. The Queen Anne architectural detailing includes the pitched roof, brick geometric design that runs along the canted bay, turned posts on the porch, and multiple entryways. The Colonial Revival form includes the regular planning, exposed bracketing under the roof eaves, and arched window hood molding and lintels. According to census information (1905), Baird was born in 1857 and he wed Jessie R. in 1885. In 1905, he was listed as a "merchant." According to census information and photographic analysis, it is likely that the individuals pictured are the members of the Baird family, ca. 1902. These may be identified as James, his wife, Jessie R.
