- Description
This photograph shows a large brick building on N Plankinton Ave. It was initially built and used as a flour mill. When this photograph was taken, the building was home to the Old Mill Inn, and to Fairbanks, Morse & Company, which made scales. There are signs for Blatz beer and Coca-Cola on the side of the building.
CC ppy / Old Manegold Mill / Upper: A landmark of Milwaukee (still there 1964), located at the northeast corner on North Plankinton avenue and West Fowler street, as 400-404 North Plankinton avenue, formerly as 70-72 West Water Street. Built by George and John L. Burnham in 1853 for use as a grain elevator. In 1866 sold to Chapin Miles and Company, rebuilt and used for floor milling, later on taken over by James B. Martin, September 1869, until 1878; then sold to Charles Manegold and Son, and rebuilt by Manegold's Son in 1880, and known as the Reliance Flour Mills until about 1909, after that up to the present time by various others. Lapham's map of 1855 indicates a building at this site at that time. A long time ago somebody painted the number 70, shown lower picture, (arrow) on the capstone, which can still be seen at present (1963), this was the old numbering along old West Water Street, from the very beginning and remained so until changed in 1930. / H.
