View along W. Juneau Ave showing front of building and two automobiles. Three story building with an attic, 4th floor with six octagon windows. Fire escape from 3rd floor. Tavern and storefront on ground floor. Schlitz beer sign visible.
Building shown (center of picture) was built in year of 1855, its owner when built as John Simon Meister, as proprietor of a saloon (tavern) and also a small White Beer brewery, also as location of residence of the Meisters. Building was razed, including others shown August 1966, site to be used for future expressway or freeway. A feature of this building were the six octagonal shaped windows shown at the top, of which, very likely was the only building in Milwaukee to have had such windows. The site or location of this building as shown was formerly occupied by two wood frame buildings which were destroyed by fire, March 6,1854, of which one of these in the early part of the 1840s was known as the Eagle Hotel and was especially for use of patrons or guests of German ancestry or origin, and as one of the pioneer places on the west side which offered amusements and entertainments in the early days.
