- Description
At the northeast corner of South Eighth and Jay Streets one can see the F. G. Buerstatte Drug Store (919 South Eighth Street) and the Emil Teitgen Hardware Store (917 South Eighth Street). Frederick C. Buerstatte fought for the Union in the Civil War and returned to open the drug store in 1872 which was run by family members until 1967 when the business became Manitowoc Drugs (Manitowoc Pharmacies). Teitgen began business as Becker & Teitgen in 1884 and was listed as a solo business in the 1894 city directory at 917 South Eighth Street. Later, in addition to his hardware business, Teitgen was vice president of the German American Bank (1909).
