- Description
This photographic print, taken by a Portage photographer around the turn of the twentieth century, is mounted on matboard and features the residence of then-owner, Mrs. P. Schumann. This Second Empire style home was built ca. 1880. It has been suggested that Paul Schumann was the original owner. The Second Empire style includes the mansard roof, gable-roof dormer projections, wide and overhanging eaves with a bracketed frieze, projecting entry pavilion, and columned portico-style porch with Doric order capitals. Schuman was a local dry goods merchant in Portage. The annotation, located at the bottom left-hand corner of the object, lists the 1952 resident of this dwelling as Carroll Bremner.
