[The following description refers to two photos.] Above: Arrow points to the former most probable site of where the first public school was held on the west side of Milwaukee in the winter of 1836 and one term in 1837 in a two story wood frame building built by George Guile, at that time “in the woods” teacher was Edward West who later moved to Appleton, Wisconsin. This was claimed by Mister West also as the first public school to be held in the territory of Wisconsin. The location of the above site at present is 1215 North Third street, a few doors north of West Juneau avenue. This same old building was also the site of where the first newspaper was printed and published in Milwaukee, known as The Advertiser July 14, 1836. This former old building (altered) was moved to 467 (old number) Third street, a short distance to the north, as shown below, from original photo of 1887, razed years ago, and the site now known as 1437 North Third street.
