- Description
One of Herman Moll's most famous maps, often referred to as The Codfish Map, it shows rivers and portages, cities, Indian villages, wind directions, routes of Spanish galleons in the Caribbean, and sailing routes of explorers looking for the Northwest Passage in North America. This map gets its informal name of The Codfish Map from the detailed and informative illustration of fishing at Newfoundland which includes the steps taken from catching the fish to drying them. The cartouche is elaborately decorated with images of Native Americans, Europeans, trees and grains. The map includes ten small inset maps of various bays and harbors. Moll's pro-British bias comes through particularly well in this map, especially in his labeling the Atlantic Ocean as "Sea of the British Empire." Various little blocks of text provide interesting information alongside the geographical names.
