- Description
Second of two photos mounted together. Close shot of rear of modest pioneer home and back of of lean-to. Backyard is overgrown with wood posts. Concrete walk on side of house. In background are flats across the street.
Above and below, front and rear view of a pioneer home located at 1315 North Van Buren Street, formerly as about 669 Van Buren Street, located on the west side of the street, between East Knapp Street and East Ogden Avenue, about the third or fourth lot north of East Knapp Street. The front part of home was remodeled, by the installation of the large windows, stucco applied to outside walls, and other changes made. Home was built by Benjamin Church, a pioneer (settled in Milwaukee 1835). Lapham's map of 1855 indicates that a building of some kind was located at the above site at that time. See back of album for more about this pioneer home. [Album no longer exists.] This home like most of the pioneer homes had rather low ceilings, and built with the floor close to the ground, having no basement.
