- Description
This photographic print, taken by a Portage photographer around the turn of the twentieth century, is mounted on matboard and features the residence of then-owner, Fred F. Goss. This residence on Prospect Avenue was built around the turn of the century and it features Queen Anne architecture. The Queen Anne details include the very steeply pitched roof with multiple rooflines, irregular and asymmetrical layout, spindled frieze at the side entry, polygonal corner with hipped roof, variety of window size and style, and leaded glass ornamentation. According to census information (1905), Fred F. Goss was born in Wisconsin in 1861 and came to Portage with his parents in 1880, where he worked for several years at the Bee Hive store. He wed Miss Fanny J. Abell in 1882, at which point the couple relocated to Cleveland for sometime, only to return to Portage once more in 1890. In Portage, Goss served as city clerk, editor of the Daily Democrat, a city commissioner, and manufacturer of woolens.
