Page Ten NEW DAY March 18, 1972 This 1886 line drawing shows the John Plankinton home and that of his son, William, according to the architect's original conception. Seven acres of lawns surrounded the houses. A fountain guarded by stone lions stood on the spot occupied today by the Marquette School of Engineering. John Plankinton home In 1865 Milwaukee meat-packing millionaire John Plankinton purchased a graceful country villa from early real estate developer William Rogers at what is now 15th and Wisconsin Ave. Plankinton transformed the house into an Italian palace with floors of mosaic, walls of mirror and silk, and door knobs of gold. Never before or since has such an elaborate home been built in Milwaukee. Plankinton flanked his home with houses for his son and daughter, pioneering the idea of the family compound. This form of "togetherness" is practiced in recent times by such Eastern seaboard families as the Lodges and the Kennedys. Since 1919 the building has been part of M
