- Description
The locomotive pictured here has vertical rather than the customary horizontal pistons. It was built by the Shay Locomotive Company. Known as “side-winders”, they were slow-speed locomotives whose design provided better traction on logging roads that went directly into the woods to where the logging operations were in progress. Steam locomotives, if properly maintained, are virtually indestructible. It is believed that side-winders such as these are still doing a job on short lines in some of the southern states today. The man seated in the cab is Harry Mundt.
