- Description
Map of North America based upon the cartographic work of de L'Isle. It shows cities, regions, lakes, rivers, Native American land, mountains, islands, and the boundaries of European claims during the French and Indian War. In this particular copy only the English claims, "Nova Mexico," and Greenland are painted in fully. The north west is left blank, devoid of any speculation, a typical feature of L'Isle. The map uses sinusoidal projection to simulate the curvature of the earth. Several routes of various explorers appear, with notes and dates, along the west coast. The Sargasso Sea appears pictorially in the Atlantic Ocean, along with two other regions with notes that are similarly depicted. The title cartouche features Poseidon holding his trident and a large fish on the right, and two other men, possibly Poseidon's sons, holding jars of water and a spear.
