This photographic print, taken by a Portage photographer around the turn of the twentieth century, is mounted on matboard and features the residence of Mrs. H. Doherty. Harriet and N.H. Wood, prominent and early members of Portage, built this Second Empire style dwelling on West Franklin Street in 1875. The French influence of the Second Empire style includes the mansard roof with dormer window projections, massive brackets beneath the eaves, patterned slate on roof, paired columns at the front entryway, belt course between the first and second floors, and paired canter bays on the faade. The home's detailing and imposing size was evident of Woods wealth and power in the community. It was the showplace of its day because of its cupola, third floor ballroom, and niches statuary. Wood held a reception to his new home in 1882. N.H. Wood died in the 1880s and his widow continued to live in the residence until 1892. The home was then owned by L.
