- Description
Senator McCarthy presents evidence against Philip C. Jessup, a veteran foreign service officer and ambassador-at-large in the Truman administration. McCarthy accuses Jessup of having communist sympathies, and he claims that Jessup is associated with six communist front organizations. To support his assertions, McCarthy refers to a collection of documents, copies of which he has prepared for the audience. McCarthy first accused Jessup in March 1950, and the senator often discussed Jessup's case in speeches during the next two years. This representative excerpt was taken from a speech delivered in Shawano, Wisconsin to the Cheese and Buttermakers' Association.

If any of you care for a copy -- I think that I’ve got about 20 or 30 here -- care for a copy, just drop my office a line addressed to Senator Joe McCarthy, Washington D.C. – they tell me they’ve had no trouble finding me at that place. [Audience laughter] I’d be glad to send this to you. I’m not going to take your time, just run over quickly, you’ll find in this, you’ll find the -- everything photostated -- pictures of all the documents, pictures of the documents showing that the ambassador-at
