This photographic print, taken by a Portage photographer around the turn of the twentieth century, is mounted on matboard and features the residence of Frank A. Rhyme. This Italianate dwelling on Dunn Street, also known as the Charles J. and Martha Goss House, was built in 1882 for the Goss family. This residence is an example of the less elaborate and late Italianate style homes of Portage built in the nineteenth century. The style includes the low-pitched hipped roof, wide frieze board beneath the broad eaves, front veranda with chamfered posts, double front doors, tall and narrow windows with arches and hood moldings. In 1901, Frank A. Rhyme, purchased the home. According to an article in the Portage Daily Register (1992), Rhyme worked in Portage as local druggist. His pharmacy business originated in Portage in 1886 and continued successfully for 87 years.
