This folder contains correspondence, both personal and professional, received and sent by Increase Allen Lapham in 1853. The correspondence covers a variety of Lapham's interests and pursuits, such as botany, geology, fossils, conchology, and meteorology. The bulk of the letters discuss a proposed project for Lapham to collect , study, and illustrate grasses of the U.S. and publish his findings. The letters track this project from Lapham's proposal, seeming acceptance, and final rejection, as well as his efforts to be compensated for the work and travel already undergone.
