- Description
This photographic print, taken by a Portage photographer around the turn of the twentieth century, is mounted on matboard and features the residence of then-owner, M.T. Alverson. Miles and Melissa Alverson built this simple Italianate residence on MacFarlane road in 1867. The Italianate details include the low-pitched roof, broad eaves with exposed, prominent bracketing, tall and narrow windows with brick lintels, front veranda with chamfered posts, and paired doors. The individual who built the residence, Miles Talcott Alverson, was born in New York in 1833 where he received his education. In 1854, Alverson moved westward to settle in Columbia County where he worked as a teacher, farmer, carpenter, and real-estate and insurance agent. According to the History of Columbia County (1914), Alverson was considered the "father of the order of Portage." His wife, Miss Melissa Ann Low, was also active in the community of Portage, as a member of the Daughters of the American Revolution. The
