Before 1916: Looking northeast toward the BELLMONT HOTEL at 112 North Main Street from in front of the North Star Nursery business office and shipping warehouse at about 109 North Main. The Bellmont Hotel was built to replace the Commercial House which burned in 1909. It stood across the railroad tracks from the depot and for the most part it served the salesmen who came to town as well as some travelers. There was a livery stable in back where they could hire a horse and buggy to peddle their wares in the countryside, everything from pianos to headstones. It had an upscale dining room and barroom. It was traditional that at midnight, when the dance orchestra playing across the street at Music Hall took a break, people would go over to the Bellmont for refreshments.
