- Description
Photograph of an etching showing house atop terraced rise. Horse drawn carriage and pedestrians on sidewalk and road. Round Italianate windows and awnings on both floors front of house.
From a drawing of what at the time was known as the Melm's Schandein residence, built in 1860s, a mansion at the time it was built, located upon a knoll, landscaped and terraced, also known as Menomonee Garden, its location shows what the height of the ground surface was at the time. About 38-40 steps led to the above home. Partly shown in the rear, buildings of the old Melm's brewery, which later became the south side branch of the Pabst Brewing Company, and which was later abandoned. Melms came to Milwaukee about 1857, and died February 1869, at the age of 50.
