As many anthropologists, including Halpern, have noted, religious festivals such as New Year are not easy to separate from various forms of commercial activity, or from non-Buddhist elements within Buddhism itself. As the guard box in the background indicates, this is at the corner of the palace grounds and near the residence of the crown prince.
