This photographic print, taken by a Portage photographer around the turn of the twentieth century, is mounted on matboard and features the residence of then-owner, E.W. Moran. Edward W. Moran built this highly elaborated Italianate dwelling in 1887. The Italianate architectural style includes a vertical emphasis, low-pitched hipped roof, wide roof eaves, a wide denticulated and bracket frieze board, ornate wrought iron work on the roof apex, tall and narrow double-paned windows with segmental arch, chamfered posts with capitals supporting the porch, and balustraded balcony. According to census information (1895), Edward Moran was born in Ireland in 1846. He wed Hannah in 1874. Moran once owned a store in downtown Portage in the location that later became the Eulberg's Mens' and Boys' store. And according to Tales of Old Portage, Moran also manned a trolley car in Portage when the city was part of the Chicago and Wisconsin Valley Street Railway Company system. This trolley transporta
