This folder contains correspondence, both personal and professional, received and sent by Increase Allen Lapham in 1850. The letters cover a wide range of Lapham's professional pursuits and personal interests including meteorology, conchology botany, geology, Native American effigy mounds, and map making. Of note is correspondence regarding borrowing, buying, or bartering fro proper meteorological equipment, correspondence addressing the state assembly for appropriations to establish a metrological observation system, lists of lives lost to storms and gales from the State Agricultural Society, correspondence with the state government to secure payment for map-making, correspondence discussion maps to attract immigrants to Wisconsin, and correspondence between the University of Wisconsin and Beloit College for payment due for minerals. The folder also includes correspondence between Lapham and his wife Ann Alcott Lapham, as well as various lists, charts, and notes for future projects.
