- Description
This photographic print, taken by a Portage photographer around the turn of the twentieth century, is mounted on matboard and features the residence of then-owner, M.J. Downey. The residence is a side gabled ell with Queen Anne detailing on East Franklin Street was built around the turn of the century. The residence was not constructed with the intricate layout and detailing of other Queen Anne homes in Portage. Instead, the gabled ell includes details suggesting Queen Anne influence in the windows, multiple rooflines, and porch construction. This is seen in the spindled frieze, geometric railing, and turned columns of the porch. The sash windows and the front picture window with leaded glasswork are additional examples of Victorian influence. Moses J. Downey, the resident of this dwelling when the photograph was taken, was a native of Portage and prominent businessman and city official of the community. According to the History of Columbia County (1914), Downey was born in Portage
