- Description
August 12, 1942. West Wisconsin Ave at 8th St, looking east. Lit up signs can be seen for Chevrolet, Graf's, Miller High Life, the Schroeder Hotel, and Carpenter's 4 O'Clock Bread. An electric streetcar is visible at right, and many cars are in the distance. A note on the back says that it was taken before the blackout. On that day, Milwaukee ran a test blackout from about 10:00 pm to 10:30 pm, in preparation for potential wartime air raids. Newspapers the next day reported that the exercise was a success. See follow-up photo, "West Wisconsin Ave, during blackout".
