- Description
Photograph showing a sinkhole alongside a newly constructed section of US highway 16, with several men working nearby. This section of road is now part of WI highway 29. According to a local resident, the sinkhole was at least 42 feet deep, and as many as 500 loads of sand were added per day during a period in 1925. It was thought that the sand had filled the hole, but on June 28, 1926 (several days before this photo was taken) water nearly overtook the road. A massive pile of logs and brush, seen at left, was put in place to secure the it.
