- Description
This photographic print, taken by a Portage photographer around the turn of the twentieth century, is mounted on matboard and features the home of then-owner, P.S. Hollenbeck. This residence on the corner of West Cook Street and MacFarlane Road features details of Italianate construction and ornamentation. Italianate features include the low pitched roof, broad eaves with exposed bracketing, tall and narrow first story windows, arched windows, and front porch veranda with chamfered posts. Philetus Hollenbeck built this residence mid-nineteenth century. Hollenbeck was known in Portage as the owner, operator, and manager of the Hollenbeck Furniture Store downtown, during the late nineteenth century. The annotation, located at the bottom left-hand corner of the object, lists the 1952 resident of this dwelling as Mrs. Frank Heidt.
