- Description
This Queen Anne structure was built in 1896 by the Morgan Building & Lumber Company for William Stolte' Sr.'s hotel. This hotel replaced the Central House which burned down in April 1896. Stolte was a local business man and farmer. He bought the Central House from Alba Smith in 1865 and ran a hotel and retail store there with Dietrich Schweke. In November of 1883 Stolte took over proprietorship of the hotel, which he and his son, Edward G. managed. Stolte ran the hotel until his death in 1914. The hotel was sold to Scott Huntley. The hotel was again sold in 1946 and then in the 80's. Owners John and Debbie Muchow and Ed Kopenhafer were remodeling the building at the time of the survey. It was known as the Cornerstone Project with plans calling for office and retail space as well as 22 apartments. The building is a pivotal property of the Main Street Commercial Historic District and is architecturally significant. Several local contractors worked on the building
The Reedsburg Historic Survey was conducted from October 1983 through April 1984 by the City of Reedsburg and community volunteers. The project was funded, in part, by a National Park Service and U. S. Department of the Interior grant, administered by the Historic Preservation Division of the State Historical Society of Wisconsin. The surveys and accompanying photographs, housed at the Reedsburg Public Library, were compiled to determine National Register of Historic Places eligibility.
