- Description
[from a handwritten account] Sixty years ago on August 6 I went to Vesper to live, a thriving mill town, my husband had been there four years. There was no rail road. Then, all transportation was by team and wagon or horse and buggy. Lumber was also hauled by team, several teams daily. The roads very muddy and at times impassible. The Sigel road now, Co. trunk F was the shortest distance. The Seneca road was also used, but it was farther, and not any better. A rail road was built from Dexterville to Vesper about 1888 lumber was shipped over the road, but still some was hauled by team. The firm there as I remember was Sherry Jerry and Cameron. Cameron bought out his partners and continued to log himself, usually he had four camps each winter, hauled logs to the mill and also run them down the creek in the spring. A new saw mill was built about 1884 or 5. I am not sure of the date but it was up to date in every way, a wonderful improvement over the old one. In 1890 there was a yard fire.
