- Description
This photographic print, taken by a Portage photographer around the turn of the twentieth century, is mounted on matboard and features the residence of then-owner, Mrs. Richard C. Rockwood. This Colonial Revival style home with some Victorian detailing once existed at 425 West Pleasant. The revival details include the symmetrical faade, rectangular shape, centrally placed pediment above the entrance, and hipped roof. Victorian decorative details are seen in the porch with its spindled frieze, geometric rail, and turned support columns. Richard Rockwood was born in New York in 1814 and came to Portage in 1872. According to the History of Columbia County (1880), Rockwood practiced medicine for 36 years, engaged in family farming, and was an active member of the Portage community. He served as an alderman, street commissioner, and President of the Columbia County Agricultural Association. He was married twice. His first wife was Mahala Packard, with whom he had two children, Helen A.
