James Kates, a volunteer in Panola County, Mississippi, from White Plains, New York, during Freedom Summer, published some of his letters from Mississippi in his hometown newspaper and many (all?) of his 1964 published letters are included here. In 1965, he worked in Natchez, Mississippi. The letters he wrote to his parents from Natchez in 1965 are included here as well and discuss the gradual dissolving of COFO.
