This folder contains correspondences to and from Increase Allen Lapham from January to July of 1871. A majority of these letters relate to Lapham's assignment and work as the Assistant to the Chief Signal Officer of the Army in Charge of Telegrams and Reports for the Benefit of Commerce. The rest of the letters touch on Lapham's other interests, such as meteorites, fossils, botany, and geology. Other documents in this folder describe: Increase Allen Lapham's trip to Jacksonville, Florida to handle the estate of Byron Kilbourn and letters to his Family, January 19th to February 3rd; Lapham's observations and conclusions determining the storm months on the lakes; list of tables made for barometrical corrections for various signal stations; tables of signal service stations, their elevations above Sea Level, and the height of the barometer cistern above the ground.
