- Description
This folder contains mostly personal and professional correspondences with Increase Allen Lapham between January and May in 1865. These letters pertain to a variety of Lapham's interests, particularly botany, topography, and geology. Several letters, sent to him or his daughters (Julia and Mary Lapham), concern their request of several natural historians and botanists to contribute a piece of writing or photograph to an album of mosses that Lapham created. This album would be sold at a fair held in Wisconsin to benefit disabled soldiers of the Civil War. Another particularly fascinating letter is one sent by Lapham to the Department of War, advising them on where they could begin a search of a conspiracy to throw suspicion on the Vice President for the assassination of President Lincoln.
