- Description
This 1914 photograph of the intersection of Wisconsin (later E Wisconsin) Ave and Jefferson (later N Jefferson) St (looking north) would be an antique car fancier's dream today, and shows that the city was definitely "on wheels". Next to the Hotel Pfister on the left, a driver looking for all the world like a chauffeur was giving his vehicle a hard crank, while further up the street, a horse drawn carriage was "double parked" in front of the Western Motor Supply Co. - which featured "Miles Cheaper" Quaker Tires. The building on the right is a familiar one to downtowners; the red brick and stone structure is the Milwaukee Club. Established in 1882 with Alexander Mitchell as its president, the club leased a two story frame house on the site it occupies today. Later, it purchased the property and erected the present building.
