The number of Mercedes on the streets in downtown Vientiane bespeaks the massive influx of aid money into the country, as well as the increasing class polarization.

This "taxi" is the more conventional kind in most of Laos. In Lao, they are referred to as a "sawng thaew", meaning literally two rows.

This taxi indicates that even remote towns like Xayabury were impacted by American and other foreign aid programs during the period of massive foreign aid.

Most of these buildings were built by the Portuguese between 1950-1975.
