Most of these buildings were built by the Portuguese between 1950-1975.

The openings in the fence are entryways to family compounds.

The storefronts in Ziguinchor are in a typical Portuguese style. Ziguinchor comes from a Portuguese word meaning, "They come. We Cry," and refers back to a European invasion.
